This is more than just a base with Norman knights

Almost two years ago I started to base some Norman miniatures in order to paint a crusader army. During basing I wondered, if there could be a solution for gaming with different systems. Read more about my basing nemesis.

My first Field of glory base. The beginning of a long lasting paint job...

In order to show some details on the construction the guys from the back. Note the basing of the second model from the right.

Here we go: Magnets hold the models in place.

Long time ago: 3 knights painted in 2006.

These were discussed because of the horse paint job.

The Multibases inspired by Decebalus for usage with Warhammer Ancient Battles.

Tobias Basing system.

He fitted square bases even in round bases.

Example with two Bowmen.

Removed Bowmen.

Deciding which system to play paralysed me. I did paint three knights on horses but nothing else. I was not sure which system to play but I wanted to paint the wonderful Perry models detailed and best I can.

I do not care for the time it will take since I do not want to play with them next week. I want to collect this army and for sure it´s opponents. So basing was far more important to me.

In my first attempt to begin the army I painted 3 knights and based an infantry unit ready for usage with Warhammer Ancient Battles. The multibases and the technic were inspired by Decebalus who uses this technic with his models for a long time. He glues thin Polystyrol sheets on top of a magnet sheet and glues his models on.

The look of these multibases always impressed me. But I was not sure if I really could wait for the Crusader book by Warhammer Historical. It seems to last for ages. Currently I am reading Field of Glory, an new ancient and medieval ruleset by Osprey publishing. In may there will be an crusader army book, so I wondered if I could paint my normans for that rule set. I am sure that the Warhammer extension will be ready when I painted and based all the models for FoG so I tried a new basing system.

One year ago Tobias from the Ulmer Strategen Tabletop club talked to my at the German LotR community event Kauzenburg and told me about his basing system with magnets. His system is really nice and works fine. You can see some of his armies as well on the Ulmer Strategen Website.

Inpired by his work I searched for some really big magnets in order to use them as a base. I combined these with Decebalus multibases and here is my result. I tried first the FoG base size since they are not big and for sure it is more difficult to base four models on a base like this.

Now it is likely that I use this basing style more often and it is likely that there will me more normans in near future. The next step will be to try some horsebases as well.
