First two Fallschirmjäger platoons – Heavy mortars and light guns

Some time ago I started my second Flames of War army –a German Fallschirmjägerkompanie.

So far only two platoons are done.

10.5cm NBW Mortars. They are quite useful. Firepower in FoW is 4+ and antitank rating is 3. This gives them even a small chance to destroy tanks and is especially valued in airborne operations where the powerful German antitank guns are not available.

I am not satisfied with the colours. I wanted to paint tropical uniforms. But the brown I took for trousers doesn’t look right. Tropical trousers for the German Airforce should be lighter with a touch of yellow. The brown and green camo patches for the jumpsmocks cover to much of the basic beige colour. The uniforms became too dark in my opinion.

Supply shortage of nearly everything was characteristic for the German troops, especially in the desert. Because of that they used a lot captured vehicles. In this case two British trucks.

A Platoon with two LG40 7,5 cm Leichtgeschütz. These guns are short ranged, have some disadvantage due to the recoilless gun special rule. On the other hand they cost only a few points and are one of the few cannons that can be deployed in airborne operations. Here I used a different colour for the trousers and the less camo patches for the smocks. I think look better than the uniforms of the heavy mortar teams.

Normally you start with two combat platoons and HQ because this is the base of most FoW companies.

My first two platoons were originally chosen to support Tankreds Fallschirmjäger for last years Tactica convention in Hamburg. So I started with a Heavy Mortar Platoon and later added the vehicles for ground operations. My second platoon so far is equipped with light guns.

I decided to paint the miniatures fitting for the North African theatre.
